Last updated
One kibibyte equals 1.024 kilobytes. To convert any number of kibibytes to kilobytes, multiply by 1.024.
The converter above works in both directions and updates as you type. Below you will find the formula, a worked example and a reference table of common values.
Data conversions carry two ambiguities at once. Bits and bytes differ by a factor of eight, and network speeds are quoted in bits while file sizes are quoted in bytes — so a connection and a download will always report numbers that look inconsistent. On top of that, the same prefix means 1,000 to a drive manufacturer and 1,024 to an operating system, which is why advertised capacity and reported capacity never match. Neither is an error; they are different conventions wearing the same name.
KiB to KB formula
To go the other way, use kibibyte = kilobyte ÷ 1.024.
About these units
The kibibyte is exactly 1,024 bytes. It exists so that "kilobyte" can mean 1,000 without ambiguity, following the IEC binary prefixes standardised in 1998.
A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the decimal convention and 1,024 in the binary one. The IEC introduced the kibibyte in 1998 to settle the ambiguity; adoption remains partial.
Kibibyte is also written kibibytes and kibi. Kilobyte is also written kilobytes, kbs and k.

Frequently asked questions
How many kilobytes are in a kibibyte? +
There are 1.024 kilobytes in one kibibyte.
What is 10 KiB in KB? +
10 KiB equals 10.24 KB. Multiply 10 by 1.024.
How do I convert kilobyte back to kibibyte? +
Use kibibyte = kilobyte ÷ 1.024. The converter above handles both directions, or see our dedicated KB to KiB page.
How accurate is this kibibyte to kilobyte conversion? +
The factor used is 1.024, carried at full double precision. Where a unit has an exact legal definition the factor is exact rather than approximate. Rounding is applied only to the displayed result, so the answer is never a calculation done on an already-rounded number.
Is there a quick way to estimate KiB to KB in my head? +
Round the factor to 1.02 and multiply. That is 0.3906% off the exact value of 1.024, which is fine for a rough figure and not for anything that has to balance.
